At the present time, European BEST Engineering Competition (EBEC) is the biggest engineering competition created for students and by students at an european level. The teams, which are made up of 4 students of technology without taking into account in what year they are, have the challenge of solving the tasks proposed by BEST in one of the following categories: Case Study and Team Design.
The competition operates at three levels: local, national and international. During the WEC, one of the 88 local rounds takes place, which means that the team which proves to be more efficient, creative and successful of each category will have the opportunity to go to the national round, and from there, to the international round.
The winning team of the European Final will be awarded the title "BEST Engineers of Europe"
Teams and participants
The EBEC competition has two participation categories: the Team Design and the Case Study.
The only requirement for participating is to be a student of the UPC, students from any year or degree can participate.
The Case Study consists in a Semifinal Round, developed by CARNET (company initiated by SEAT, Volkswagen Group Research and the UPC) where 19 teams of 4 students will compete during a day, and a Final Round, with only the winning 6 teams.
In the Team Design 6 teams of 4 students will compete during a weekend.
Due to the outstanding number of applications on last editions, this year for the first time EBEC Barcelona will welcome one hundred participants. Don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of it!
The Case Study is the category in which the students can explore their analytical, technical and social skills in order to solve a problem that is similar to what an engineer can encounter during his professional career. At the end, each team has to expose their solution and convince the tribunal that his proposal is the most beneficial. The Semifinal has a duration of 6 hours and, the Final, 8 hours.
If you think your ideas are innovative and you are willing to test your wit, creativity and logic… Case Study is your challenge!
In the Team Design, the participants will have to test their ability to design, create and put together a device that provides a solution to an engineering problem in a limited time with a limited amount of materials. Creativity is also very appreciated! The prototype is shown to a jury once the task has ended. It has a duration of 12 hours.
If building and constructing devices catches your attention, you get excited by the challenge of designing your own ideas and making them come true while you get your hands dirty, you’ll love taking part in the Team Design!
During the last edition of EBEC Spain, participants had 7h to design a Smart Home. They had the construction plans of the original house, the location and other technical data. They had to fulfill some requirements but also had freedom to decide which projects they would run.
During the last edition of WEC, participants designed and built a vehicle prototype, capable of carrying a member of the team. The vehicle had to have a braking system, it had to move without the driver touching the floor and had to have a system to change the direction. In a fight against time, and only with the materials available, the 8h of competition were a real challenge for the participants, which managed to reach very original solutions!
